How It Works
RENEW: Spiritual Renewal for the 21st Century is a total renewal experience for the parish, spiritually transforming people through Sunday Eucharistic celebrations, small Christian communities, daily personal meditations, special parish activities, reflections for families with young children and Christian social action. Because of the variety of ways in which people are engaged, something is available for every parishioner, creating a unifying and enthusiastic spiritual climate in the parish.
Over a three-year period, a time of preparation is followed by five six-week blocks of time, or "Season". Each of these Seasons has a major gospel theme that is broken down into weekly themes and experienced in the variety of ways mentioned above. To ensure a successful experience, RENEW International provides comprehensive training for Diocesan Core communities, Parish Core Communities, and parish Small Community Leaders.
The flow of the RENEW: Spiritual Renewal for the 21st Century process is as follows:
| January - September | Training and Preparation |
| October - Mid-November | Season I | God |
| Lent | Season II | Conversion |
| October - Mid-November | Season III | Discipleship and Justice |
| Lent | Season IV | Reconciliation |
| October - Mid-November | Season V | Evangelization |
In addition to training, RENEW provides a diocesan priests' retreat, the development of Parish Core Communities to support parish small communities, a focused outreach to young adults, a parish mission, and an ecumenical component. Throughout the three-year process, these events and activities are accompanied by a strong network of pastoral support from the RENEW team and the diocese.
RENEW small communities materials appear in English, Spanish, French (Haitian and Canadian), Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, Tagalog, Italian, Polish, Portuguese. A set of small community materials is designed for the African-American community. Materials have also been prepared for hearing and sight-impaired participants, as well as a special adaptation for Prison Ministry.
